Product Description

The PAT150R is a model in the PAT100 series of handheld portable appliance testers. This series also includes the PAT120 and PAT150 models, all of which are designed to perform simple, fast, and safe electrical safety tests in various environments such as offices, shops, and business units.

Model Overview

PAT120

Equipped with pre-programmed test groups that have fixed pass/fail limits, used for testing class I and class II appliances, as well as extension and power leads. By default, it provides insulation testing at 500V, and a 250V option is also available, which is suitable for safely testing IT equipment and surge-protected devices. The leakage test is conducted using the "substitute" leakage method, eliminating the need for a mains supply during the test.

PAT150

In addition to all the functions of the PAT120, the PAT150 can test 10mA and 30mA portable RCDs. It also offers separate tests for continuity, insulation, leakage, and SELV equipment, which can be quickly accessed through the quick-test button. The PAT150 supports mains-powered leakage testing and live-circuit measurement, which can be used to test the mains supply, socket polarity, and measure voltages up to 300V AC. Experienced users can adjust the test group pass limits and test durations, and null the bonding lead resistance.

PAT150R

The functionality of the PAT150R is the same as that of the PAT150, but it has the ability to recharge NiMH batteries without removing them from the instrument.

Common Features

  • Safety and Compliance: The PAT100 series fully complies with all relevant UK and European requirements for electrical safety testing. It has a reading category of CAT II 300V, ensuring safe operation during testing.
  • Durable Design: The instruments feature rubber-armoured cases and hardened, scratch-proof glass, making them tough and able to withstand impacts in the field or during transportation.
  • Battery-Powered: All three models can be powered by inexpensive and commonly available AA-size alkaline cells or NiMH rechargeable batteries. The PAT150R is equipped with rechargeable NiMH batteries.
  • Ease of Use: The test results are indicated by simple symbols, such as a checkmark or cross, to show pass or fail. The instruments also have an LCD display with backlight, which can show measurement values, limits, and pass/fail symbols.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the primary differences between the PAT120, PAT150, and PAT150R?
The PAT120 is designed for standard Class I and II testing with fixed pass/fail limits. The PAT150 adds 10mA and 30mA portable RCD testing, separate tests (continuity, insulation, leakage, SELV), live voltage measurements, and adjustable test settings. The PAT150R offers the exact same test functions as the PAT150, but includes internal charging capability for NiMH batteries.
Can I safely test IT and surge-protected equipment with the PAT100 series?
Yes, all models in the PAT100 series feature a 250V insulation testing option, which is specifically designed to safely test sensitive IT equipment and devices with surge protection without causing damage.
What is the battery life and power supply configuration of these testers?
The testers provide approximately 1000 hours of battery life and run on eight AA alkaline or NiMH rechargeable batteries. The PAT150R model allows NiMH batteries to be recharged directly inside the unit using a mains charger.
What safety ratings and environmental protections do the testers have?
The PAT100 series fully complies with UK and European safety regulations, carrying a CAT II 300V reading category. They feature an IP40 environmental protection rating and are housed in tough, rubber-armoured cases with scratch-proof display glass for durability in the field.
How does the substitute leakage test work on these units?
The substitute leakage test uses a low voltage AC test source (less than 50V AC) at nominal power frequency. The instrument measures the leakage current and scales the reading to represent the equivalent leakage at 230V AC, allowing leakage tests to be done safely without needing a mains voltage supply.
